Champion Orthopedics is a new name for comprehensive orthopedic care that brings together the expertise of Sports Medicine Associates (SMA) and Augusta Bone and Joint physicians and services. Our goal is to advance patient care and improve patient experiences – every day. Each part of your patient experience – imaging & diagnostics, multidisciplinary evaluations by our team of experts, rehabilitation, certified athletic training and preventative patient education – are all under one roof at our new state-of-the-art facility in Augusta.  Additionally, in order to better serve our Aiken area patients, we recently relocated to a larger office in The Village at Woodside, located across from the Center for Health and Wellness at 211 High Gate Loop.

SMA physicians have served the sports medicine and orthopedic needs of the Central Savannah River Area communities for decades and Augusta Bone and Joint has offered arthritic joint, spine and orthopedic injury care for over 30 years. Our new name – Champion Orthopedics – demonstrates our attitude of excellence as we help our patients get back to their best whether they are non-stop kids with a broken bone, athletes of any age with minor or major sports injuries, active seniors with painful joints, patients with spinal issues or those with more complicated bone or muscle issues or conditions.

A Team of Experts from Diagnosis through Rehabilitation

Dr. Jewell Duncan, a Sports Medicine fellowship trained Orthopedic Surgeon, created the first fully integrated comprehensive orthopedic care program in the CSRA in 1991 while at Georgia Regents University (Medical College of Georgia).  His vision and leadership expanded into private practice, when he, Dr. Dave Minter and Dr. Robert Gambrell formed Sports Medicine Associates of Augusta (SMA) in July 2001.  While providing expert comprehensive care to their patients, the founding physicians continued to build upon their vision, bringing a third Sports Medicine fellowship trained Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Alex Collins, on board in 2005.  Their commitment to providing exceptional comprehensive care to their patients in a state-of-the-art facility was realized with the opening of their new facility in The Village at Crossroads in Augusta in 2008.  In 2011, the practice added four additional physicians, expanding the group's expertise, and SMA initiated a name rebranding to Champion Orthopedics to more accurately reflect all levels of Family Medicine, Sports Medicine, General Orthopedics  and Spine services. We specialize in pediatric and adult sports medicine, joint replacement, minimally invasive spine surgery and sports concussions. Our team of board-certified physicians, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, radiology technicians, nursing/medical assistants, and other staff members provides the following services:

We combine advanced arthroscopic surgery and surgical treatment options with exceptional physical therapy, certified athletic training and sports enhancement programs to allow for an integrated treatment plan which creates consistent and effective outcomes at all levels.

Champion Orthopedics incorporates treatment planning with our fully-integrated team and multi-disciplinary expertise to provide the best outcomes. Our goal is to get you on an accelerated pace to get back to where you want to be – without pain or restrictions to activity and function. We understand the need for timely care of orthopedic injuries, and are able to see you within 24 hours for urgent or critical injuries, to begin your road to recovery as soon as possible.  Additionally, one of our hallmarks is our ability to schedule patients, even new patients, within one week.

Community Support Across All Sports

Champion Orthopedics provides community support to athletes of all ages across a vast range of sports. Our sports medicine experts and certified Athletic Trainers work with local, regional, state and international teams for sports training guidance and injury prevention.  We provide medical coverage to local area schools and organizations throughout the school year, ranging from a weekly visit that include:

• Checking on athletes and their conditioning
• Evaluating new injuries
• Developing at-home rehabilitation programs for athletes
• Providing additional training to coaches, such as taping techniques

Additionally, we provide coverage of higher-level sporting events, conducting on-field assessments during football, hockey and soccer games, and gymnastic events.
